A day in the life of a sterile technician for Adrenaline involves a lot of hard work, long hours, time management and attention to detail. In the end it pays off knowing that each and every one of our customers’ health and safety is ensured. Although the work can be tedious there are plenty of advantages involved. I work in a secluded room where I get to listen to music and work at my desired pace without distractions. I’ve been working for Adrenaline for about five years now and a really big personal pay off for me is the respect that comes with the job, knowing that all the hard work and time I’ve spent isn’t in vein or unnoticed. The artists’ appreciation and respect is definitely a big factor in my motivation. The shop is like a family and we are all contributing to it, doing our part to make sure everything runs smoothly. My responsibilities provide somewhat of a foundation for the shop because of the mass volume of customers we receive on a daily basis; it is crucial that we consistently have sterilized equipment and supplies in stock, without the required supplies the shop could not function.
Each day of the week basically consists of all the same tasks. A few include: scrubbing tubes and piercing tools, packaging jewelry and medical supplies (gauze, q tips, toothpicks), filing waivers/release forms from the previous day and putting together piercing and tattoo aftercare packages for customers. Once supplies and equipment have been organized they are packaged in a medical pouch which is sealed and placed in the autoclave for sterilization. On Mondays we perform inventory to keep track of what we have in stock and order more of things we do not have or are low on, such as jewelry, cleaning and medical supplies. Wednesdays we perform spore tests which are used to show that our Autoclave is working properly.
Being a sterile technician is an all round beneficial experience. You get to meet a lot of great people as well as open doors for yourself in the future. If you’re working in the industry to progress later in life as a piercer or tattoo artist, apprenticeships are always an option. I believe that we are all in this line of work for different reasons but no matter what they may be, being a part of this company is an unforgettable and great learning experience.
